Fifty years ago, the war in Vietnam was draining lives, money, and moral energy from America. People were growing restless for change. Two major leaders stood up to campaign for this change only to be brutally cut down. Others -- unconventional leaders -- rose up to call for a similar transformation. What they achieved was different from what many people expected. In this exploration using discussion, video documentaries, and stage adaptations of historical events, we will examine the most shocking moments of this most shocking year -- the murders of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, the Democratic Convention in Chicago, and the demonstration of political power at the Mexico City Olympics. We will explore the effect of these events and their resonance in our society today. You will learn more than you can imagine about these subjects in this engaging and provocative course. $15 materials fee covers the cost of 160-page spiral-bound text.
